Yes, you can. I was just playing with this when I read this question. The MIXAMP can be communicated to in one of two ways:

1) S/PDIF Optical out from a soundcard or your motherboard's in-built sound output to the MixAmp
2# USB to the MixAmp #which has to be plugged in anyway for the MixAmp to be powered and to charge the headphones#

It would appear to my limited testing so far that the full 7.1 support is still provided through the USB communications port.

When opening up the Playback Devices in Windows, you'll be presented with either the "Headset Earphone", which is actually the USB communications to the Astro A50, and/or your S/PDIF digital output port #assuming you have one enabled#. If you have both #or other output devices are listed), ensure that the "Headset Earphone" is set to the default device to activate USB mode to your headphones.

I just wanted to follow up on my answer above. I tested some more, and the 7.1 Surround Sound does not appear to be supported through the USB communications port. It appears to just be stereo only.

It's still very good and immersive with stereo only when gaming, however in the end I re-enabled S/PDIF on my motherboard's sound card and moved back to doing it that way.

So in summary, the answer to the question is yes you can via the USB connector, but it's stereo only.

Hi Sgt.Prometheus.

The main difference is that this is a fully wireless headset with the receiver built into the headset. The headset features three audio modes which are suited for gaming, media and movies and later this year, Astro plans to release some software to alter these EQ's to your liking.

The Headset is also over the ear and because the speaker tags have been removed, this allows for better outside isolation and bass response.

In addition to that, the headset does not feature customizable speaker tags or microphone. The microphone is now hard wired into the headset allowing for you to flip it up to mute.

answer 2
Hi, thanks for your question.

A50 Differences:

-A50's are totally wireless

-A50's have a new wireless technology in use (Kleernet 5.8Ghz chipset)

-The A50's now have a new mute feature. Flipping the microphone up to the headband mutes the mic.

-Discrete buttons for Power and EQ on the headset. The EQ is used to switch modes such as normal, pro and music intended.

-They retain the sound of the A40's but you have them in a completely wireless package

-Only a small difference in weight. The Mixamp has made it slightly heavier, however the extra padding added to the headband totally cancels this extra 'weight' out.

-Only a very small price difference with the wireless A40's for a product that is brand new and a upgrade from the previous models.

Hope I helped. :)

answer 3
The A40s are wired and have a wider Frequency range, if bought with the mixamp other headets are supported such as the A30s and astars. The A40s are lighter in weight, which results in less head pressure compared to A50s. The A40s speaker tags do not work with the A50s, and as of right now A50s do not support speaker tags. the A40s have a removable mic, A50s do not!

The A50s have a shorter frequency response range, they are heavier, you can NOT use any other headets with the A50s to achieve 7.1 surround sound. (insert sad face) finally with all that said the final difference is that the A50s are $300
and the A40s are $250.

The main, general difference between the A40s and the A50s is that they are meant for two different setups.

The A50s are meant to be used in a home theater setup (a game console or HTPC on your TV). The built-in wireless setup of the A50s takes out cables that would be snaking around from the headset to a separate receiver. If you're playing on a TV, the A50s are the way to go.

The A40s are meant to be used either on your desk (playing on a computer monitor) or in a competitive venue (MLG Pro Circuit and similar events). The wired connection of the A40 along with the Mixamp Pro allow for a wider variety of connectivity options (such as coaxial digital audio and 3.5mm microphone input), and it allows for daisy-chaining headsets for closed-circuit voice chat (useful in LAN tournaments). However, the wired setup of the A40s makes it impractical for use in home theaters. But I do like the fact that the A40s connect to the Mixamp with a 3.5mm connection, so you can plug it into pretty much anything (such as a phone).

I have a wired A40 setup myself, and I use it on my desktop computer. Just go with whatever headset fits your situation best.

Hi, thanks for your question.

Unfortunately the Astro A50's do not have a removable microphone since the new microphone has a new mute system. Rather than a mute switch, the Astro team have added a mechanism where you can mute the microphone by pushing it up to the headband. Due to this new system, the microphone cannot be removed.

Hope I helped. :)

Unfortunately, no. But to fix that, the mute button is just a simple flick of the mic boom upwards. Put it back down, your voice is on, put it up, its off. But the good thing is that it is completely wireless except for the chat cable for xbox. Besides that, its completely wireless. :)

The TAX and the shipping depends of your ZIP/ Postal Code.

For security we can't ask for your direction, but you can see an aproximation in the 'Shopping Cart' section. There you put your ZIP/Postal code and can see how much of shipping and TAX will be.

Personally I like the A40 better. the only thing you get with the A50 is a stand for the headset and they are wireless. I found the A40s to actually have more features than the A50s like four EQ modes on the mixamp unlike the three on the A50s. Another big factor for most people is the big difference in price. To me your paying a lot more money for not so much more quality.

It has everything you need. The only reason you would need an extra cable such as the PS3 chat cable for the A40s is if you want to have your headphones connected to both PC and PlayStation 3 at the same time without having to keep moving wires. I have PC, PS3, an Xbox 360 all connected at the same time. of course I can't use it all at the same time. Works great.

However only stationary with the mixamp (USB powered). You can get a wiring adapter from the mini headphone jack to the standard and plug the ipod/ipad/iphone in that way.

Personally, i hook that same cable from my iPhone to the aux port on the headset, though with no mixamp, there's no 7.1 surround sound. Other than that they work great.

I say Bluetooth (preferably Dualband) should be added in for next models (though you still only get stereo through bluetooth without the mixamp.

You can only buy the Astro headsets from this website. You will have to order them from here.

This way, you will get the lowest price possible, without the conventional stores raising the price to profit off them.

(I bought a pair of A40's from Quebéc, Canada, and the cost of delivery was only around 50$. It'll surely be lower for residents inside the U.S.)

Question

Laptop connectivity?

I plan on using these with my Apple MacBook Pro. I keep hearing about them only being able to use optical cable for computers, my computer doesn't have this. Will I be able to use the A50 wireless headset with my computer, if not which ones should I use?

There are various converters that will change from 3.5mm to optical. I have found them on the web and they are resonability priced. Something like this should work with any laptop allowing you to enjoy the advantages of wirless. I really like mine and I am able to move about the room and still listen to music, etc.

Macbook pros and most apple computers for the last few years include a mini-pin optical out. You just need an optical cable with a mini-pin connector on one end and you are good to go. I am listening to my a50s on my Macbook right now. The only issue you may have is the mac not knowing which line to use, which can be fixed by manually changing the sound settings.

You do NOT need an optical cable. I looked everywhere for this and even ordered a sound card with optical since its written nowhere. It works just fine with USB only on Windows 8. You don't even have to plug in a 3.5mm cable into it.

Thats all you get. You don't get the 5.8tx and all the other accessories that come with the other model. The A50 Standalone Headset is intended as an add-on for existing A50 Wireless Headset owners. You will need an A50 Wireless Headset with the MixAmp(TM) Tx in order for this headset to function properly.

Hi spooky.

A MixAmp Pro or MixAmp 5.8 will not work with the Astro A50 Headset. Instead, it uses it's own transmitter which allows for 5.8GHz Lossless Audio over KleerNet.

Hi, thanks for your question.

As you may know or not know, the A50's feature the old wireless Mixamp in the headset itself. So without anything but the Astro Wireless 5.8 Ghz Transmitter w/ KleerNet™ and the headset, you get full 7.1 Dolby surround sound. There is no reason why you should have to use a mixamp with the A50's. However if you intend to use a different headset with a Mixamp than you may be better off by just buying the Mixamp.

Hope I helped. :)

The charging cable is to recharge the rechargeable batteries in the astro a50.
The play and charge cable is the same but allows you to play while charge at the same time. Basically like a wired version of the Astro a50.

There is no difference other than the length. I use the short cable for power and the longer one that came with it for charging, since I play from my desk. It will even charge while you play!
